Computer Curriculum Grade 6
5-Week Course
Course Description
The sixth grade computer course will engage students in advanced uses of computer technology and will transition the fundamentals learned in elementary school to the more sophisticated applications used in middle school.
Students will learn how to use a wide variety of hardware and software to conduct research and create projects. They will be able to apply these skills in their projects and assignments for all subject areas while at North Middle School. We will also teach students about the most popular tools and systems currently being used to communicate and share information, and how to use them safely and responsibly.

Create Computer History Timeline
Students will learn about the history of a wide variety of technologies and create a timeline to show their evolution from when they were created to the present.
Applications used: Microsoft Word
Research and Write an Article or Report about Internet Safety
Students will learn about safe Internet practices and how to protect their privacy, then research and write an article or report on the topic. At the same time, students will use current electronic tools for research, communication, and creativity to create their work.
Applications used: Internet Browser, Microsoft Word
Create a Name Acrostic Poem
Students will learn page layout and design by gathering photos and text, organizing them, and presenting them in an appealing way.
Applications used: Word, The Print Shop, Comic Life
Slide Show Presentations
Students will learn to develop and create multimedia presentations, incorporating photos, graphics, text, audio, and animations. They will create one slide show on the history of a specific technology and one on a topic of personal interest. In developing their slide shows, students will create themes and story lines, gather and develop presentation assets, and organize them into engaging presentations.
Applications used: KidPix Studio, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop (for scanning and basic editing)

- Learn to work with a wide variety of media, including audio, photographs, illustrations, video.
- Use a variety of applications to organize and present school projects in an interesting and engaging way via slideshow presentations—involving research, writing, organizing materials, working with different media, and creating the final presentations of their work.
- Learn effective research skills—how to use technology to acquire educationally sound data and then assemble and organize this data and site sources correctly.
